Multistakeholder Pledge: Refugee Environmental Protection (REP) Fund
Multistakeholder Pledge: Refugee Environmental Protection (REP) Fund
Background
The REP Fund is the world’s first initiative bringing together social impact, environmental restoration, and carbon finance in displacement situations on a large scale, to address the critical challenges related to environmental degradation in these contexts.
Pledge description
The pledge aims to support a UNHCR flagship climate initiative resulting in tens of millions more trees planted and hundreds of thousands of refugees and their hosts gaining access to clean cooking solutions over the next decade. This aims to restore the local environment, reduce carbon footprint in displacement contexts, result in improved health and gender outcomes, and generate 'green’ jobs. The REP Fund will scale these impacts by linking refugees and host communities to the global carbon markets, empowering them to become part of the global movement to combat climate change.
The pledge builds on the announcement of the REP Fund initiative at the High-Level Officials Meeting in 2021, generously supported by Government of Uganda, one of the potential hosts for REP Fund-supported programmes.
The initial capitalization target for Fund pilot project is USD $30 million in grants, which is expected to unlock USD +200M in carbon financing to support REP Fund programs. To date, USD +3M has been secured through contributions from Innovation Norway, Government of Denmark, UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe, DLA Piper and Oliver Wyman.
