Statefree Case Assistant: A Digital Tool to Support Stateless People in Germany
The Statefree Case Assistant is a new digital solution designed to legally empower and support stateless individuals in Germany. Developed by Statefree e.V. in close collaboration with community members impacted by statelessness and legal experts, the tool will help users structure the information and evidence needed to seek recognition of their statelessness within existing administrative procedures. As Germany has no dedicated statelessness determination procedure, the Case Assistant provides step-by-step guidance on relevant information and documentation, improving accessibility, clarity and self-advocacy.
This initiative contributes to the Global Refugee Forum pledges to improve protection for stateless people and supports the Global Compact on Refugees by advancing stateless- and community-led innovation, digital access to information and more inclusive pathways to documentation.
The ongoing technical development can be followed on the project’s GitLab page. Please note that this is an early-stage, work-in-progress prototype and not yet a functional public tool.
In the spirit of responsibility-sharing and a multi-stakeholder approach in the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees, the content included in the Digital Space for the GRF Progress Review 2025 is submitted by States and other stakeholders themselves. They do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of UNHCR and its employees, and UNHCR is not responsible for any errors or omission, or for the results obtained from the use of this information.
