The importance of resettlement over time
UNHCR resettled refugees from its first day - resettlement appears explicitly in the Statute at Article 9. In 1950, resettlement was used to find solutions for people scattered around Europe after World War II, with the over one million refugees resettled to 37 countries since 1945 supporting post-war development. Today, resettlement ensures protection and a solution for refugees facing acute risks that cannot be addressed in their countries of asylum. It offers them a chance to rebuild lives in a country where they can be protected and where access to naturalization and citizenship promise an end to years of displacement. Resettlement can be a life-saving solution for those facing threats of deportation, discrimination, critical medical conditions, or other perilous situations.
