The project in brief

The project is implemented by H.O.P.E. Worldwide in New Zealand. It is currently ongoing. 

Our project provides a platform for individuals to connect and exhibit their own culture while also learning and embracing the cultural values of others, facilitating a better and safe integration process in a new country. By fostering an environment of cultural exchange and understanding, we aim to promote inclusivity, respect, and harmony among diverse communities, ultimately creating a welcoming and cohesive society where everyone can thrive.

It's main goals are: 

  • Promote Cultural Exchange: Create opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and exhibit their own culture while learning and embracing the cultural values of others.


  • Facilitate Integration: Support newcomers and ethnic communities in integrating into the new country by providing a safe and inclusive space that encourages understanding, acceptance, and mutual respect.


  • Boost Confidence: Empower individuals by fostering a sense of pride in their cultural heritage and promoting self-confidence in their identity, facilitating a smoother integration process.

Workshops and Training Sessions: Conducting workshops and training sessions on cultural sensitivity, intercultural communication, and diversity awareness. These sessions aim to enhance participants' understanding of different cultural values, beliefs, and practices, promoting respect and acceptance.

Language Exchange Programs: Facilitating language exchange programs where individuals can learn and practice different languages spoken by members of the community. This encourages linguistic diversity and fosters stronger connections among individuals from various cultural backgrounds.

Community Dialogues: Organizing community dialogues and forums where community members can engage in open and respectful discussions on topics related to cultural diversity, integration, and social inclusion. These dialogues provide a platform for sharing perspectives, addressing concerns, and fostering understanding.

Cultural Workshops: Conducting cultural workshops where participants can learn about traditional arts, crafts, and performances from different cultures. Educational Programs/Workshops on Treaty of Waitangi: Conducting workshops specifically focused on the Treaty of Waitangi, its historical significance, and its implications for contemporary society. These workshops provide opportunities for students to engage in discussions, explore different viewpoints, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the treaty.

What challenges were encountered in delivering the project and how were they overcome?


While delivering the project, several challenges were encountered. These challenges varied in nature and complexity. Some of the common challenges included:

Language Barriers: Overcoming language barriers posed a significant challenge, especially in facilitating effective communication and understanding among individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Translation services and language support had to be provided to ensure equal participation and comprehension.

Cultural Sensitivities: Navigating cultural sensitivities and addressing potential misunderstandings or conflicts required careful consideration. It was crucial to create a safe and inclusive environment where all participants felt respected and valued, while also promoting open dialogue and understanding.

Resource Constraints: Limited financial and logistical resources often posed challenges in implementing and sustaining various project activities. Securing funding, acquiring necessary materials, and coordinating logistics required careful planning and resource mobilization.

Community Resistance or Mistrust: Some communities might have initially been resistant or skeptical about participating in the project due to past experiences, mistrust, or cultural barriers. Building trust, establishing rapport, and addressing concerns were essential to encourage active involvement and participation.

Capacity Building: Building the capacity of staff, volunteers, and community members involved in the project required time and resources. Providing training, mentorship, and support to ensure effective program implementation and sustainability was a continuous challenge.

Limited Access to Education: Some individuals, particularly refugees, faced limited access to education due to various barriers. Despite these challenges, the project team persevered and employed strategies such as collaboration, community engagement, continuous learning, and adaptability to overcome obstacles and maximize the project's impact on promoting cultural understanding, integration, and social inclusion.

How they were overcome

To overcome the challenges encountered during the project, the project team implemented various strategies and approaches. Here is a description of how these challenges were addressed and overcome:

Language Barriers: Language barriers were addressed by providing translation services, interpreters, or bilingual staff/volunteers to facilitate effective communication. Visual aids, multilingual materials, or language learning resources were utilized to support comprehension. Language exchange programs and language orientation sessions were conducted to improve language skills and foster understanding among participants.

Cultural Sensitivities: Cultural sensitivities were addressed by conducting cultural sensitivity training for staff and volunteers. Open dialogue sessions were organized to encourage participants to share their cultural perspectives and experiences. Clear guidelines for respectful interactions were established to foster understanding and mitigate potential conflicts.

Resource Constraints: Resource constraints were overcome by exploring diverse funding sources, such as grants and sponsorships, and engaging in fundraising activities. In what way does the good practice meet one or more of the four objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees?

Objective 2: Enhance refugee self-reliance

Our project aligns with Objective 2 of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) by easing the pressures on host countries. By helping refugees boost their confidence, well-being, and mental health, as well as successful integration, our project contributes to creating a happier and more harmonious society - in turn allowing refugees to be more self-reliant.

Yes, there is an expectation and desire for the project to be continued or extended. The positive outcomes and impact achieved thus far indicate the importance and value of the project. Continued implementation would allow for the consolidation of the progress made and the further advancement of its objectives. Extending the project would provide an opportunity to reach more individuals, deepen community connections, and sustain the positive changes that have been initiated. Additionally, by extending the project, it becomes possible to build on lessons learned, refine strategies, and address any remaining challenges more effectively.
