Latin America

The Latin America contribution for the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the UNHCR and the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees is directly related to the Cartagena Regime. The regional approach to the International Refugee Law is comprehensive and multidimensional. The panel aims to include this broad perspective and its relations to the Global Compact on Refugees. The session will be divided into two parts with a 10-minute break. 

Part 1 will focus on protection and discuss the Chile and Mexico experience. Part II will focus on Durable Solutions and New Challenges and look at Argentina’s experience and new challenges regarding environmental migrants in the region. Panelists are members of the Latin American Academic Network on the Law and Integration of Refugees.

Part 1 – International Protection (17:00-18:30 CET / 13:00-14:30 BRT / 10:00-11:30 CST) 

Discussions will focus on overcoming challenges to the Refugee Status Determination Process in Chile through the provision of legal aid; and on the protection of child asylum seekers and refugees in Mexico. 

Part 2 – Durable Solutions and New Challenges (18:45-20:15 CET / 14:45-16:15 BRT / 11:45-13:15 CST) 

Discussions will focus on local integration in Argentina and paths to ensure equal opportunities for migrants, asylum seekers and refugees; and on the legal protection of environment-induced migrants: evolution and possibilities from the perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean.
