Nigeria Validates GCR Roadmap
In clear demonstration of her commitment to the provisions of the Global Compact on Refugees; and solidarity with Persons of Concern, and affected host communities, Nigeria, in 2019, pledged:
- To include matters of refugees, IDPs and their host communities in the national development plans;
- To strengthening of the country’s protection capacity;
- To ensure availability and accessibility to durable solutions for refugees and IDPs; and
- To sustain Nigeria’s role in regional and sub-regional efforts in addressing the root causes of displacement.
Nigeria carried out nation-wide stakeholders’ consultations on the GCR in selected cities that are representative of the geo-political character of the country. These consultations, under the auspices of the NCFRMI and UNHCR, crystallized the formulation of the GCR pledges.
Consistent with Nigeria’s commitment to the pledges, Nigeria has started to implement them. The high-level Stakeholders validation of the implementation Roadmap for Nigeria’s GCR pledges on 30 November 2021 points to Nigeria’s emphatic commitment to honouring the pledges, which has commenced, with for instance, the capturing of matters of refugees, IDPs and host communities in the 2021 -2025 Medium Term National Development Plan, among other initiatives.
The Nigeria GCR Roadmap will become a tool for coordination, action and strengthened engagement with States, federal government agencies and development partners, drawing attention to the growing number of refugees and their inclusion in the country.
