Session 1: Strategies on Refugee Protection in Southern Africa

The session will focus on local integration of and durable solutions for refugees in the Southern African region. Panel discussions will reflect on regional priorities, promising partnerships, challenges and opportunities for local integration; as well as on the complementarity of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1969 Organisation of African Unity Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa.

The session will reflect on the political dimensions of responsibility sharing and refugee protection in the Southern African region. Discussions will zoom in the challenges and opportunities for the protection of refugees and asylum seekers in Botswana and South Africa.
